However, elsewhere development carries on a pace elsewhere within the city with the new Hepworth Gallery being built (See video top left). Next door The Navigation Mill is also being restored to a high standard, with offices and apartments being built around it. (See middle and bottom left video). Can Wakefield get it right with this development?

Although not a big fan of Indian film, Yorkshire has been playing host to the
I missed out on this one only realising that the race was on today!
Today sees the Etape du Dales, which covers some 110 miles.
To find out more about the event take a look at the following site Etape Du Dales and there is also a story featured in yesterday's Yorkshire Post about covering a shortened version of the ride.
I have to say the area where the ride takes place is one of the nicest
parts of the UK, which doesn't see overly many tourists, who more often head for
London and Edinburgh. The Yorkshire Dales are one of the most spectacular areas in the country, as shown in the video that I posted quite a while ago. One thing that is recommended is the Settle to Carlisle Railway, which is a stunning rail journey, which you can also start in Leeds, if you want to start in a city...The picture above is one of many viaducts along the route. Sometimes you can also do this by steam train, on the Northern Belle, which isn't cheap.
Inspired by the question of the day a few day's back, I thought I would try entering the title of my blog "life in Yorkshire" into searchmash.com , my favourite search engine. Alas, I only came third in the listing (on the front page). So what did come in front of me? In position 1, on the listing, I was beaten by the Regional Development Agency for Yorkshire, Yorkshire Forward. More interesting was the page that greeted me, Quality of Life, full of facts about the county, for example.
- Yorkshire is Britain's biggest county, Yorkshire has more historic houses, castles and national parkland than anywhere else [in Britain]
- This region has one of the shortest travel to work times in the country. Sheffield and Leeds are the most transport-friendly cities in the Uk providing drivers and other commuters with the best travelling experience, according to research by International Property adviser GVA Grimley. (although my journey into work is not short!)
- The region is leading the UK in urban renaissance with world class architects such as Will Alsop re-defining Bradford and Barnsley. Hull and Sheffield are also undergoing massive investment to transform their roles as commercial hubs in the region. Yorkshire and Humber also has 4 of the country's top ten richest districts.
- Leeds has been called the Milan of the North. Readers of Condé Nast Traveller recently voted it their favourite UK city destination. It also came third to the West End of London and Glasgow in the Experian's 2003 survey of the best place in the country for shopping, having the first Harvey Nichols to be built outside London. With highly rated restaurants, cool independent bars and a clubbing scene that never ends, you could be excused for doing nothing more than shopping, eating or drinking. Which would be a shame because Leeds is also home to the Northern School of Contemporary Dance, the Northern Ballet and the internationally acclaimed West Yorkshire Playhouse theatre
- Just west of Leeds, Bradford is a cultural melting pot, whose unique atmosphere created from influences around the globe was recognised in its bid in 2003 to be European Capital of Culture. It didn’t win in the end but the bid brought acknowledgement of Bradford’s strengths on an international stage. Bradford’s history is worn proudly but with a modern twist. Its huge mills have been revived to provide homes for creative industries and specialist retailers, it lays claim to be curry capital of the country, and is also home to the National Museum of Photography, Film and Television.

In position 2, above me in the Yorkshire magazine, Yorkshire Life, which is a fantastic magazine to subscribe to get a flavour and a picture of Yorkshire, a magazine that has been going some 60 years..
In some ways, I am glad that I have only been beaten by two very important institutions, which play a major part in promoting Yorkshire to the World.
